It looks like partygoers will have to go home earlier soon! That’s because Federal Territories Minister Khalid Samad recently announced that entertainment outlets in Kuala Lumpur will have to close at 1am beginning January 2019.

According to NST, Khalid said this at a press conference in the Parliament lobby on November 29. He said that these entertainment outlets will have to comply with the new rules and stop operations past 1am as it will be strictly enforced.

However, there are certain entertainment outlets which would be allowed to operate until 5am with special permission as they’ll be catering to foreign tourists. Khalid added that not all of these outlets with special permission had foreign tourists there as checks revealed that some of the outlets were merely catering to locals. It was not mentioned which outlets would be affected.

“We will have to check again on these special permission outlets. We don’t want it to be abused, especially complaints from the public,” he explained. This new regulation comes after Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) had proposed to reduce the operating hours of entertainment outlets and asked them to close at 1am.

Mayor Datuk Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan said, “Most of these entertainment premises that operate after hours are frequented by locals, not foreigners. Therefore only a select few entertainment outlets that are frequented by tourists would be allowed to operate until 5am.”
