South Asia is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful regions on Earth. It is home to a flurry of colourful cultures and a rich history renowned worldwide.

However, those planning to travel to the region will more often than not receive cautionary reminders of the alleged heightened risks and dangers traversing the countries in the region could pose, especially if you’re a solo woman traveller.

Sri Lanka is the best place for solo female travel

Well, according to the global magazine Time Out, such a bad reputation shouldn’t be given to the South Asian island nation of Sri Lanka as contrary to the rest of the region, the country is one of the best and safest places for female solo travellers to travel to.

In its list of best places for solo female travel in 2024, Time Out ranked Sri Lanka as the easiest, safest and coolest place for women to travel and explore new cultures.

The global magazine further elaborated that Sri Lanka is like a miniature India with its own unique charm, making it the perfect first stop for women solo travellers to start their journeys in South Asia.

The country is also popular with backpackers, and Time Out says it’s the perfect size for a week or a month of travel.

According to the global magazine, the country has many destinations worth exploring, including ancient Unesco-listed sites such as Dambulla and Sigiriya and the tea plantations in Nuwara Eliya.

The article added that the golden beaches of Arugam Bay, Mirissa and Hikkaduwa promise beachfront hostels, surfing and delicious local food for travellers.

Time Out’s best places for solo female travel in 2024

Besides Sri Lanka, the global magazine also named 2 other Asian nations in the list, which are Japan in 4th place and Vietnam in 6th, the latter being the only Southeast Asian representative in the ranking.
