Attention shopaholics! You might want to read this before going for your ‘Merdeka Sales’ shopping spree.
A shopping mall in Seri Kembangan, Selangor was recently exposed of their dirty tactic when an observant consumer spotted the price difference between two identical items. Kantoi!
According to Sinchew, the shopping mall decided to use the ‘Merdeka Sales’ as a cover to move their mattresses. In order to entice consumers, they slabbed on a generous 70 per cent discount on the mattresses; but before that, they quietly inflated the price of the single bed mattress by three times.
It was reported that the original price of RM57.80 was jacked up to a whopping RM289! After applying the 70 per cent discount, customers would have to pay RM86.70 and they would’ve gone home happily not knowing that they’ve been ripped off. So the discounted price is higher than the original price, in what way was that a discount?
This trick only came to light after a consumer discovered the same type of mattresses bearing different price tags, and he had bought the more expensive one.
The consumer then made a complaint to the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK).
The authorities immediately launched an investigation and confiscated items worth RM13,294 from the shopping mall. If convicted, the person behind this crime and the company will face a fine of RM10,000 and RM25,000 respectively.
Consumers are urged to report to KPDNKK if they see any products or items bearing outrageous price tags. The complain can be made via phone call (1800-886-800), official website, email (e-aduan@kpdnkk.gov.my) or Facebook.
So guys, spread the word and be a wise consumer during the Merdeka Sale season!
