As reported by Astro Awani, the Selangor police have received a total of 180 extortion reports, including the spread of revenge porn and nude videos without the victim’s consent from January to November 2020 alone, said Selangor CID chief, Datuk Fadzil Ahmat.
Among the reports, 110 involved unknown individuals sending pornographic videos and pictures not belonging to the victims just to disturb them, 42 cases involved ex-husbands and ex-boyfriends circulating revenge porn, and the rest were syndicates targeting victims online.
“The syndicate will record the lewd videos and nude pictures so that they can extort the victims by threatening to disseminate them.”
“Among the applications which are often used by the syndicates are Wechat, Facebook, Michat, WhatsApp, web sites (GODATE2NIGHT), Locanto.asia, Line and others,” he said.
Datuk Fadzil Ahmat also said that these syndicate would target and dupe individuals regardless of gender, age or sex in order to obtain lewd videos and photographs from the victims.
They would often demand RM10,000 and RM20,000 from victims, threatening to post their photographs and videos online and among their family and friends if they do not comply.
We urge all Malaysians to be wary of who they trust, both online and offline, and to refrain from recording and sharing lewd photos or videos to others.
