A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale hit North Sumatra, Indonesia last night, with tremors being felt all the way here in Peninsula Malaysia. According to BERNAMA, the tremors from last night’s earthquake were felt in Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor.
In fact, one high-rise residential building in Kuala Lumpur was so affected by the tremors that most of its residents evacuated and the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department (JPBM) was called to the scene. As shared by JBPM Kuala Lumpur’s official Facebook page, the department received a call regarding tremors felt by a resident of the Pudu Impian 1 Apartment in Jalan Cheras at 11.13 pm yesterday.
A fire team of 10 JBPM officers along with a machine was then dispatched to the scene from the Pudu Fire and Rescue Station for further monitoring and inspection. The operation’s commander Mohd Zaini bin Mohd Omar asserted that no cracks were found in the building following the tremors and the premise was in a safe and habitable condition. Moreover, no injuries were reported from the incident.
In the aftermath of the tremors, JBPM Kuala Lumpur revealed that it received 20 reports of tremors from the public following the earthquake in Northern Sumatra, while JBPM Selangor received 14 reports. As reported by Harian Metro, Fire and Rescue officers were sent to several locations in Klang Valley to follow up on the emergency calls and to ensure the safety of the buildings.
As reported by The Straits Times, the earthquake’s epicentre was at sea southwest of Padangsidempuan city in North Sumatra, some 500km away from Kuala Lumpur. Thankfully, no immediate reports of damage or injuries were reported and no tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake.
