Polling day for the 2023 State Elections was held yesterday and Malaysians are still reeling from its aftermath today. While nothing much changed (state governments in the six participating states remain the same), it was a particularly poor showing by the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance or more commonly known as MUDA.
Seeking to make an impact as a ‘third force’, support for the party was lukewarm during the state polls, with its 20 candidates losing in all constituencies they contested in.
Not only that, all of the candidates failed to garner a sufficient number of votes and lost their deposits.
For reference, each candidate must put down an RM5,000 deposit to the Election Commission to contest in the State Election and to get the deposit returned back, they must win at least 1/8 or 12.5% of the total of votes counted.
Among the notable MUDA candidates who lost during the 2023 State Elections include the party’s secretary-general Amir Hariri Abd Hadi who obtained only 1,834 votes in Seri Serdang.
Its information chief, Loqman Long faired worse by only getting 376 votes in Terengganu’s N14 Bandar constituency, while another candidate, Viky Harikrishnan only got 253 votes in Penang’s Perai seat contest.
Besides that, Melanie Ting Yi-Hlin, the youngest candidate in this PRN at 23 years old only received 1,462 votes in the Bukit Antarabangsa constituency. Another notable MUDA candidate, R. Thanusha received 2,357 votes in Sentosa.
Following the results, MUDA co-founder Syed Saddiq apologises and takes full responsibility for the poor showing.
