Beginning 15th August 2020, the price ceiling for face masks will be reduced from RM1.50 to RM1.20, said Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi, Malaysia’s Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs.

The wholesale price for face masks will also be decreased to RM1.15 from RM1.45 originally starting from the same date, according to Bernama.

“Based on the ministry’s surveillance and monitoring, face mask production and distribution is sufficient and supported by import. So, there is no supply issue,” he said when answering questions at the Dewan Rakyat on 23 July 2020.

The rationale behind the decision was to conform to the government’s plan to consider the mandatory use of face masks in all public areas, as announced by the Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The plan of making wearing face masks compulsory in public places will be made official starting from 1st August 2020.

Malaysia Global Chamber Of Commerce (MGCC) also urged the authorities to monitor the sale of face mask starting from 15th August 2020 to ensure that the wholesalers and face masks sellers do not merely heighten the price.

“The people are affected by the Covid-19 pandemic that plagued the whole country, thus lowering the price of the face masks can certainly bring them a sigh of relief,” said Datuk Seri Dr Alex Ong, the president of MGCC in a statement, according to Bernama.

He also encouraged the government to reduce the burden of the people by taking the right approach to help the purchasing of face mask in the workplace as well as for the children in school.

Not only in crowded places, remember to always wear a mask whenever you are out of the house!
