43yo M’sian Who Attacked Rider with Meat Cleaver for Honking at Him Pleads Guilty, Faces Up to 20 Years’ Jail

A salesman pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court here today to a charge of causing grievous hurt to a motorcyclist in a violent road rage incident along the Federal Highway motorcycle lane last week.

Azmi Jantan, 43, pleaded guilty after the charge was read before Judge Datin Fatimah Zahari. According to the charge sheet, Azmi intentionally caused grievous injury to a 45-year-old man by attacking him with a meat cleaver, a weapon capable of causing death.

Details of the shocking offence

The offence was committed at Kilometre 14.6 of the Federal Highway motorcycle lane in Section 13 at approximately 8:19 AM on 11 June.

The accused was charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which carries a punishment of up to 20 years’ imprisonment, a fine, whipping, or any combination of those penalties upon conviction.

 

Bail set at RM15,000 pending sentencing

During the proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Ho Zee Xing proposed bail at RM30,000 with one surety. The prosecution also requested additional conditions requiring the accused to surrender his passport and report to the nearest police station once a month.

Azmi, who was unrepresented, appealed for a lower bail amount of RM5,000.

The court subsequently granted bail at RM15,000 with one local surety and ordered the accused to report to a nearby police station once a month until the case is concluded. The court fixed 8 July for the presentation of facts and sentencing.

Video of the incident sparked outrage

The case attracted widespread public attention after a video of the incident circulated online, as previously reported by Harian Metro.

Police stated that the victim was riding to work towards Kuala Lumpur when he sounded his horn at another motorcyclist who was allegedly obstructing his path along the motorcycle lane.

This action reportedly angered the suspect, who stopped by the roadside before attacking the victim with a meat cleaver, leaving him seriously injured.
