Hong Kong actor Benjamin Yuen recently completed filming for the Malaysia–Hong Kong co-produced police action film ‘Black Ops’, marking his first collaboration on such a cross-regional project.

Production began in January and wrapped up smoothly after nearly five months of shooting.

Benjamin’s first time acting in Bahasa Melayu

On Sunday (3 May), Yuen took to Instagram to share his experience working on the film. He revealed that one of his biggest challenges was performing entirely in Malay for the first time in his career.

Alongside his reflections, he posted a series of behind-the-scenes photos showing himself covered in bruises and wounds, demonstrating the physical demands of the role and his dedication to the project.

Yuen also reminisced about memorable moments on set, noting that he had been looking forward to the project since discussions began in September last year.

Now that filming has successfully concluded, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to One Cool Film Production’s Malaysia branch, Skop Productions, and the entire crew for their trust and support, which made his time filming in Malaysia both smooth and reassuring.

Stepping into the villain’s shoes

At a press conference in January, Benjamin greeted the audience in Malay, saying, “Tuan-tuan dan puan-puan, apa khabar, selamat petang,” which immediately drew loud applause.

In the film, Yuen plays Prinze, the son of a crime syndicate leader. He shares many scenes with co-stars Sharnaaz Ahmad, Andy Teh, and Hisyam Hamid. To prepare for his Malay-heavy dialogue, he wrote extensive phonetic notes in his script to ensure his delivery was accurate, according to an Oriental Daily report.

Dedication to action and realism

In addition to mastering the language, Yuen performed his own action scenes wherever possible to enhance the realism for the audience.

“The fight scenes this time aren’t overly intense, so I’m still able to handle them myself,” he remarked.

Black Ops is slated for a theatrical release by the end of 2026 and is widely expected to become a landmark production for Malaysia’s film industry.

While a specific premiere date has yet to be confirmed, anticipation is already building for this cross-border collaboration.
