A Symphony for All: This One-Night-Only Classical Orchestra is Coming to DFP On 2 June

If you’re on the lookout for something different to do in KL, whether to impress your date or expand your cultural horizons, you won’t want to miss the debut of the Tutan Festival Orchestra (TFO) at Malaysia’s premier concert hall.

Happening for one night only on 2 June, the TFO Masterworks Series is a landmark orchestral concert taking place at Dewan Filharmonik PETRONAS (DFP).

Regardless of whether you’re a first-time listener or a classical music enthusiast, it’s an orchestral experience any music lover would undoubtedly appreciate.

Here’s why you should check out the TFO Masterworks Series:

1. A classical concert for every type of music enjoyer

The TFO Masterworks Series brings together the iconic, expansive orchestral works of Rachmaninov and Sibelius, which helped shape the music world, and the world premiere of an original composition by one of Malaysia’s leading contemporary composers.

The inaugural concert will feature one of the most recognisable classical works in the world: Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Fun fact: countless movies, TV shows, and pop songs borrowed themes from the concerto, including Celine Dion’s chart-topping cover of All By Myself and Frank Sinatra’s Full Moon and Empty Arms. So, there’s a good chance you’ll recognise its memorable melodies.

The classics are paired with the world premiere of Rimba II, a brand new orchestral work by Malaysian composer and pianist Ng Chong Lim. Inspired by the idea, movement, and atmosphere of the “rimba” (forest), Rimba II offers a contemporary perspective that reflects Southeast Asia’s evolving artistic voice.

With an intriguing combination of familiar masterpieces and new music that transcends time and geography, there’s definitely something for everyone to appreciate.

2. A legend returns to DFP

The TFO Masterworks Series also marks the return of Kevin Field, former conductor of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO), to the DFP stage.

Field began his tenure with MPO in the early 2000s, where he played a key role in shaping the orchestra’s musical direction and building its presence at DFP for over a decade. Many in the local classical music scene view his time at DFP as a definitive chapter in the orchestra’s history.

Now, the seasoned conductor returns to the very stage where he spent years conducting, bringing with him both that legacy and a new chapter that’ll inspire concertgoers.

Joining him is the Tutan Festival Orchestra, which will make its debut at the TFO Masterworks Series. Though this is their first performance at DFP, TFO has been part of a successful series of concerts, including productions like Symphonic Rock, The Art of Sound, and Broadway & Beyond.

3. Not just for classical music fans

If you’ve never been to a classical concert before, we’re here to assure you that there is still plenty to enjoy at the TFO Masterworks Series. After all, its programme is designed to balance familiarity with discovery, allowing all listeners to experience the depth, emotion, and thrill of a live orchestral performance. No need to understand music theory or know the composers!

Together with the TFO, these works will bring you on a journey through lush Romantic expression, bold national voices, and contemporary creation. And all you have to do is let the music do its thing and wash over you~
