Five individuals, including a female nurse from a government clinic, have been remanded to assist in an investigation into the alleged sale and purchase of invalid medical certificates (MCs) in Pekan, Pahang.

The remand order was issued by Magistrate Melody Woon Sze Mun following the arrest of the suspects as part of the ongoing investigation.

Suspects placed under remand

During the proceedings, Melody granted a four-day remand order until 19 June for four of the suspects, while the fifth suspect was remanded for three days, according to Sinar Harian.

The alleged MC-selling syndicate was uncovered after the Pekan District Health Office received information on 12 May about the sale of medical certificates among workers at a factory in the area.

Police subsequently launched an operation around Pekan on 15 June and arrested five suspects aged between 30 and 55.

Among those arrested were three individuals believed to have acted as middlemen, a civil servant suspected of supplying the invalid MCs, and another individual believed to have obtained and used the documents.

The MCs were being sold for RM50 to RM200

Police believe the fake MCs were sold for between RM50 and RM200 each through several individuals who acted as middlemen to find customers.

Investigations later revealed that the serial numbers used on the MCs originated from an official MC booklet issued to a government clinic in the district.

Further checks also found that the documents bore the name and stamp of a medical officer who had been transferred to another workplace since 2023.

The case is being investigated under Section 468 of the Penal Code for forgery with the intent to cheat, as well as Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
