Tun Mahathir hasn’t been able to catch a breather ever since he became Malaysia’s prime minister, for the second time. Just when we thought he couldn’t get himself any busier, he has agreed to star in the latest road safety video!

This has been confirmed by Transport Minister Anthony Loke who said Tun Mahathir was chosen for his “star power appeal”. Guess he’s a celebrity prime minister now!

“I asked him and he immediately agreed to do it,” Anthony said, adding that he himself will be acting alongside Tun M in the video.

Why don’t they just hire celebs like Fattah Amin or Neelofa for the video? Well there’s a very good reason behind it – budget constraint!

In previous years, the Road Safety Department would receive a budget of RM50 million to carry out such campaigns, but since 2016, the budget has been massively cut down to just RM1 million! Such a big difference!

Working with such limited budget, they have no choice but to do everything by themselves in order to get the road safety message across to road users. Luckily, the production teams from Limkokwing University and TM Malaysia have agreed to help produce the two video clips for free!

It’s certainly heartwarming to see our prime minister and transport minister getting involved in the low-budget video shooting in order to raise awareness among the rakyat. If we’re honest, they could’ve scrapped the campaign in the name of insufficient funds, but they chose to be resourceful and are making it work – and that’s why the new government rocks!

The video clips are expected to be aired on television and social media very soon, and we can’t wait to see Tun M and Anthony in action!
