PDRM: Lorry Driver in Fatal Crash That Killed 9 PDRM FRU Officers Has 6 Previous Criminal Records

The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has given an update regarding the fatal accident involving a PDRM Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) truck and a stone-laden lorry in Teluk Intan, Perak, earlier today, which claimed the lives of nine PDRM FRU officers.

Hilir Perak District Police Chief ACP Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin was quoted by BERNAMA as saying the stone-laden lorry driver was detained this morning, while Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisham Nordin confirmed that the suspect has previous criminal records.

Noor Hisham added that the 45-year-old lorry driver with 20 years of driving experience has six prior criminal records, including drug-related offences. 

As for his record of traffic summonses, the Perak Police Chief said that his side is still verifying that information.

The lorry driver, who was uninjured in the crash, was detained earlier today under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Preliminary urine screening showed the driver testing negative for drugs.

The fatal accident happened at around 8.50am today when a truck carrying 18 FRU personnel was returning to Ipoh from an assignment in Teluk Intan.

The FRU truck was rammed by the gravel-laden lorry along Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam. As of the time of writing, nine FRU personnel were killed in the crash, two were seriously injured, while seven others sustained minor injuries.
