Malaysia’s new attorney-general, Tommy Thomas, has just been appointed today! Almost everyone is relieved and happy about this decision, but apparently there are a FEW who don’t seem to agree with it.
According to Malaysia Kini, a viral WhatsApp message has been making its rounds recently, urging the public to protest against Tommy Thomas’ appointment as attorney-general. It said to gather at Istana Negara at 8am; however, only four people showed up. That’s less than all fingers in one hand!
This protest was organised by a non-governmental organisation called Pertubuhan Biru Ber “1” Abata Malaysia. Its vice president, Zahlan Haji Ridzuan had said that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Muhammad V, was apparently pressured into making the decision to appoint Tommy Thomas as AG.
He said this was evident when there was a delay in the appointment after prime minister Dr Mahathir had proposed Tommy Thomas’ name to the King more than a week ago.
However, when it was announced by the palace that Tommy Thomas’ appointment was official, Zahlan said that they had to “agree”, reported The Star.
“We have to agree (akur) because we do not want to be labelled as rebellious (derhaka),” he told the press during the four-men protest this morning (June 5).
He also criticised Pakatan Harapan, urging them to fulfil their manifesto, and condemning them for making irresponsible statements that would jeopardise the country’s economy, amongst other things.
What do you think of this mini-scale protest against Tommy as AG comprising just four people? Tell us in the comments!
