Yes, your read that right! ‘The Loaf’ is back again and there’s not one, not two, but three branches opened so far!
The local bakery that’s popular amongst Malaysians had previously closed down its business in April 2018 after 12 years of operation. This homegrown brand is closely associated to Dr Mahathir as it was known by the locals that it is owned by the former (now current!) prime minister.
Currently bought over by construction company Ekovest Bhd, it reopened and revived the bakery. Its CEO told FMT that they have bought over 100% of The Loaf’s interest as part of the group’s strategy to enter the food and beverage (F&B) industry.
According to its Instagram account, The Loaf can currently be found in 3 locations:
- Langkawi Perdana Quay
- Sunway Pyramid
- Nu Sentral

The Loaf boasts amazing quality pastries and bread which are all handcrafted by artisan bakers, plus it uses 100% natural ingredients.
Besides The Loaf, Ekovest shares that they also own a Michelin star restaurant Xin Dau Jin in Eko Cheras Mall and are looking to acquire more F&B assets.
Previously, the bakery was a venture between Dr Mahathir and Motoko Resources Sdn Bhd, a company with Japanese interests – and Dr Mahathir had 51% stake in the company, reported FMT. Unfortunately, due to it making losses, Dr Mahathir made the choice to shut down the business in 2018.
For all The Loaf fans, rejoice that we’re able to taste their amazing pastries again! I know I’m looking forward to their chocolate croissants :L
