She was already experiencing some contractions when she decided to hop on her bicycle and go to the hospital. The New Zealand Member of Parliament Julie Anne Genter was actually in labour at that time and she gave birth an hour after arriving at the hospital. She shared the happy incident on her official Facebook page where she wrote,
“Big news! At 3.04 am this morning we welcomed the newest member of our family. I genuinely wasn’t planning to cycle in labour, but it did end up happening.”
New Zealand is known for having very humble leaders. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern famously took maternity leave while in office and brought her three-month-old to a United Nations meeting representing New Zealand as she was still breastfeeding.
Julie Anne Genter also explained that her contractions weren’t that bad when they left at 2am to go to the hospital even though they were 2-3 min apart and picking up in intensity by the time they arrived at the hospital 10 minutes later. She went on to share that both she and the baby are healthy.
