It’s official! Warner Bros. is returning to Middle-Earth with new Lord of the Rings films, set to release in 2026.
The Oscar-winning team behind the nearly $6 billion blockbuster “Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies is reuniting to produce two new films, according to The Guardian.
Peter Jackson WILL BE RETURNING!
Peter Jackson, the filmmaker of the original trilogy will be producing the films, alongside his longtime writing partners, Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens.
“They will be involved every step of the way,” said CEO of Warner Bros. David Zaslav.
The first film will be centering Gollum, with original actor Andy Serkis returning & directing!
Although the project is still in its early stages of development, the first film will be called Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum (working title), with Andy Serkis set to star and direct the feature!
For those of you who are not aware, Serkis played the character of Gollum in the first trilogy of Lord of The Rings, as well as The Hobbit. He’s also known for voicing & playing Caesar from the Planet of the Apes trilogy (imagine having two great trilogies under your belt!)
In their press release statement, Peter Jackson stated that, “It is an honour and a privilege to travel back to Middle-earth with our good friend and collaborator, Andy Serkis, who has unfinished business with that stinker – Gollum!”
We can’t wait to see how much better the VFX design of Gollum will be like, considering he was already absolutely scary from back in the 90’s!
There’s more Lord of The Rings content for the fans out there?!!
If you’re just as impatient as us, we have something that may curb your LOTR appetite for the time being.
Warner Bros is also producing The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, an animated prequel to the trilogy, directed by Kenji Kamiyama and featuring the voices of Brian Cox and Miranda Otto, which is due for release in December 2024.
Well if you waited over 21 years, 2 years will fly by! We recommend setting a reminder in 2026 so you can prepare to book your tickets because trust us when we say THEY WILL BE SOLD OUT IN SECONDS!
