With Najib Razak’s appeal for a house arrest partially successful, does this mean the former Prime Minister will get to serve the remainder of his prison term in the comfort of his home? Here’s what Najib’s lawyer had to say during a press conference.
“We expect Najib Razak to go home within a month.”
Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah explained that this would happen if the judicial review proceedings challenging the existence of the Titah Addendum in the Kuala Lumpur High Court were to be in their favour.
“It all depends on the court… If the judge rules in our favour, then Najib gets to go home within a month.”
The Addendum, which was approved by the former King, Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah stated that Najib is allowed to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest.
Just yesterday (January 6), a three-judge panel chaired by Datuk Azizah Nawawi, who sat with Datuk Azhahari Kamal Ramli and Datuk Seri Mohd Firuz Jaffril, by a majority of 2-1, allowed Najib’s appeal to obtain permission to commence judicial review proceedings for Najib’s house arrest.
What did the former Prime Minister think of the court’s decision?
According to Shafee, Najib, 72 was happy with the court’s decision and even gave 2 thumbs up.
“He seemed happy and very relieved that finally the injustice inflicted on him was acknowledged.”
Many supporters and Najib’s friends in the politic world came to show solidarity, including UMNO Youth Chief who screamed “Daulat Tuanku!” after his appeal for a house arrest was approved.
