It is no secret that the public transportation and roads in Malaysia are always congested, especially during peak hours.
So, solutions are way overdue.
Recently, the co-founder of MUDA, Lim Wei Jiet shared 3 solutions to the public transportation issue in Malaysia on Astro Awani’s Dialog Tiga Penjuru.
1. Controlling the cost of construction
According to Lim, we should make sure that the costs of building MRT and LRT lines do not spiral out of control, like MRT2 and ECRL.
This is because high construction costs usually translate to high fares, which burdens the public.
“Additionally, the billions of ringgit that could’ve been saved is unable to be channeled to other programs and incentives that are not related to public transportation,” he said.
2. Improving first mile and last mile connectivity
“Much more needs to be done. We are seeing unstrategic MRT stations, inconsistent feeder busses, broken escalators and lifts, insufficient parking spaces and defective pavements which do not aid OKU and the elderlies’ journey from their homes to the stations.”
Lim also highlights how a bus tracking app that traces the location of feeder buses live and provides estimated time of arrivals could be useful.
While there are efforts to do this with Google, he said that more consistency is needed.
3. WFH should be encouraged
In his final point, Lim suggests that employers should be given incentives to encourage their employees to work from home so that there is no need to face traffic jams every day.
“At the very least, we should implement a hybrid model so that we don’t have to spend hours traveling every day. That is a waste of time and productivity,” he explains.
Netizens share their thoughts
In the comments, netizens were mostly split into two camps – those that agreed with the lawyer’s opinions and those that did not.
“Working from home is the most important! We can already do that.”
In response to the netizen who was excited about working from home, another netizen questioned if reducing dependency on public transport is the way to go.
Meanwhile, another netizen lamented how Klang Valley-centric Lim’s solutions are.
