M’sians of All Walks of Life & US Tourist Band Together to Help an Uncle Collect Cans He Dropped on KL Road

A foreign content creator travelling in Malaysia recently caught a wholesome moment on camera, which took place on a street in Kuala Lumpur.

The travel and food content creator from the United States, Max McFarlin, was walking at Kampung Baru in the Malaysian capital city when he noticed an elderly man had ripped his bag full of cans he collected, spilling almost all of it on the street in front of a bust stop.

McFarlin, who is a popular YouTuber with over 1.18 million subscribers shared a snippet of his long YouTube video exploring Kuala Lumpur on his TikTok account, which has since captured the attention of Malaysians.

The incident can be seen near the halfway mark of the video, whereby the aftermath of the uncle’s ripped bag caused the road to be filled with the cans the uncle collected.

Seeing this, McFarlin said he felt so bad for the uncle and decided to try and help him clean the mess and recollect all the cans the uncle dropped.

 

One by one, Malaysians from all walks of life come and lend the uncle a hand

The travel YouTuber then helped push the cans to the side of the road before picking them up one by one.

As he and the uncle were doing this, passersby from all walks of life came to the scene to lend a hand to the uncle to pick up all the cans.

By the end of the video, at least 7 people came to the scene to help the uncle pick up the cans, put them inside a basket and put them back inside his bag.

After saying goodbye to the uncle and the other individuals who were helping, McFarlin shared that seeing the uncle’s struggles resonated with him because his father used to collect cans as well to support his family.

McFarlin said,

“That hit home to me because I’ve been going to scrapyards selling cans my whole life. Well, not me, my dad. But anywhere we went, anytime he saw a can on the ground you pick it up, you gather as many cans as you can, you take them to the scrapyard and you sell them for money.”

“So I understand what that man’s doing. So seeing something like that, you know when he’s making pennies, hard labour, making not much money and happening something unfortunate like that happen to him, you got to step out there, you got to help him.”

Malaysians were touched by the wholesome sight

In the comments section, many Malaysians were touched by what they saw, with many also praising McFarlin for going out of his way to help the uncle.

One commenter said that it was nice to see Malaysians and even tourists helping each other out in Kuala Lumpur.

Meanwhile, another commenter was emotional seeing many people from different walks of life banding together to help the uncle, including a Western tourist, a woman working in corporate and a p-hailing rider.

One Malaysian found the sight so uplifting that he said that the incident restored his faith in Malaysia, saying that no matter the turmoil we face, we need each other.
