Hiring a live-in helper can be a huge help as well as a huge risk as you’re ultimately allowing a stranger into your home.
For one Malaysian woman, taking that risk has only led to a traumatic experience.
Taking to the NewMamaDiaries TikTok page, she anonymously shared how her live-in maid basically tried to steal her life by impersonating her on social media and caused rifts between the woman and her husband.
She started with an introduction as to why she decided to get a live-in maid.
“In January 2024, we began searching for a live-in helper because I was experiencing severe morning sickness during my pregnancy. I needed assistance around the house and care for my dogs. In the future, she would also help look after my child as I am a working mum and do not plan to quit my job.”
“The agency representative introduced us to a maid who had never worked in Malaysia before. Despite claiming to have experience, we discovered months later that this was not true. While the agency’s actions were also filled with lies and mistakes, I will not go into detail about them here. My primary concern is the individual I allowed into my home,” she wrote.
The woman explained that the maid moved into her home on January 27, and was given a spacious room, a private bathroom and a fair salary for her duties.
She also ensured that the maid was well-fed, given clothes, cosmetics and other necessities, and was treated with respect. The woman also gave the maid a bonus on Hari Raya and sent money to the maid’s children.
Things went well for a while, though the woman’s friend warned her against that.
“I remember one of my good friends and colleagues, who had experience with maids (which I lacked), advising me to give (the maid) 6 months to reveal her true colours. I should have listened to her. During the first 6 months, she did an excellent job caring for me, my dogs and my property. However, things changed soon after,” the woman said.
When the problems started, there were only minor issues that the woman overlooked but the first major red flag appeared when she found that fresh breast milk had been thrown out.
“I initially didn’t suspect her and blamed myself for being inattentive. Since I didn’t have much milk to spare, I asked her about it. At first, she denied touching it but later claimed she thought it was spoiled. Which version of the story was true remains unclear.”
Then, things started getting weird.
Another red flag happened when the woman, her husband and their baby left their home in Kuala Lumpur on a Sunday, which was the maid’s day off.
“Typically, she would stay in her room on Sundays, enjoy Netflix (which I provided access to), free food and Wi-Fi. However, that day, she went upstairs to my wardrobe and spent several hours there. Although I have cameras throughout the house, I avoid placing them in my bedroom and wardrobe for privacy reasons,”
“From the footage, I saw her enter my bedroom, close the door and then enter the wardrobe with a laundry basket, making it appear as though she was folding clothes,” the woman explained.
The woman was later told that the maid was folding clothes in her room and that she was overthinking things. But, things only went downhill from there.
Following this, the maid made several major mistakes, including leaving wet dog food out until it spoiled before putting it into their fridge. This caused a terrible smell that took a week to eliminate and food contamination, which led to food poisoning.
The maid also compromised her baby’s health by not cleaning the baby’s sterilizer properly.
“My husband discovered milk buildup and fungus at the bottom of the sterilizer, which contributed to our baby developing diarrhoea and compromised my child’s health,” the woman said.
Causing rifts in the marriage.
The woman and her husband often argued over the maid’s work performance as, in front of the husband, the maid would behave differently.
“She presented herself as very pitiable, making him fresh juice and cooking eggs for breakfast, which made it seem like she was a great candidate while portraying me as a delusional and angry wife. In reality, she did nothing for me and maintained a sour face when he wasn’t around,”
“She successfully caused fights between us, creating havoc in our relationship and she definitely took pleasure in it.”
The woman finally got answers as to what was going on in her wardrobe!
Soon after, the maid broke the phone the woman and her husband had bought for her.
“While we were getting it repaired, I discovered she had a TikTok account. I found out that while I was away, she spent hours in my wardrobe, trying on my clothes and shoes, dancing in front of the camera, and streaming on YouTube in my outfits,”
“She used my office access card to make it appear as though the house, clothes and job were hers. She even asked if she could create a YouTube channel and post with my baby, likely to make it seem like my child was hers,” the woman shared.
And it appears that the maid wanted to steal every aspect of her life, including her husband!
“She had fabricated and impersonated everything in her life, living in delusions. She wore my collection of Air Jordans and other sneakers I had collected, used my jewellery and even the gemstones I had made for my husband. When I checked her browser history, I found she had visited pornographic websites using a VPN,”
“While I understand she may have personal needs, the theme of the videos – babysitter sleeping with the employer – suggested she not only wanted my job, clothes, shoes and baby, but also my husband.”
The maid was ultimately returned to the agency where she will most likely be rehired into someone else’s home.
However, the maid had apparently put up quite the fight when the agency personnel came to remove her from the woman’s home.
“She tried to threaten us with a knife when the agent came and demanded that she stays in my house!”
“This experience has taught me the importance of thoroughly vetting anyone I trust with my child. I hope that others will take heed and be cautious, as some people can appear to be one thing while hiding harmful intentions,” she added.
