A Malaysian woman is encouraging other women to be more independent by earning their own money and not relying on a man after she witnessed a heartbreaking incident.
Taking to her Threads account, Norr M Noor shared how she saw a man rudely yelling at his wife for asking for a RM3.80 bag of potato chips while waiting in line at a grocery store cashier counter.

She wrote, “Yesterday, I went to go buy groceries, I was rushing (to pick my items) as it was already 9:30pm. Then, I queued behind this one buff man to make payment when I heard from behind me, ‘Sayang, can we buy one of this? I haven’t had it in a long time‘. This man’s wife was showing him (a pack of potato chips), which costs only RM3.80.”
“Do you know what he answered? ‘ARE YOU THAT HUNGRY? WILL YOU DIE IF YOU DON’T EAT IT?‘. The wife looked at me and I looked down, I was unwilling to see her holding in her embarrassment.”

Feeling horrible for the man’s wife, she ultimately decided to urge women to ‘have your own money‘ so that they can buy whatever they want without needing permission from a man.
“Seriously, I cannot with men like that. So infuriating. Please lah, to the girls out there, please have your own money. It’s to a point where the woman just wanted some chips but is humiliated by her husband. This kind of man is really asking to be beaten up,” she added.
You can say no, but say it nicely
Many have since agreed with Norr M Noor’s stance while condemning the man for yelling at his wife when he could have turned her down in a nicer way should he not have been able to afford the chips.

“Ehh, I cannot with things like this. If I was there, I would have bought the chips and given it to the woman in front of her husband. It’s okay to be poor but don’t be rude.”

“Just over RM3.80, she was treated like that? He probably just wants a servant (out of his wife). That’s why my mother said women must get an education and make their own money, if not they’ll get yelled at over RM3.80,”
“Try yelling at her if she had money, do you think she’ll stay quiet after being humiliated like that? At least (women with their own money) will have some respect.”

“Ya Allah, it’s insanely saddening for a husband to talk like that. What’s the use of being a stingy person, and if he ‘doesn’t have’ money, don’t say it like that. If the wife is asking for the chips, she probably really wants to eat it. It’s something cheap, not something that costs tens of Ringgit,”
“Can people like this not get married, he’s mistreating someone’s child.”
