Considering the importance of education, Malaysians are rather shocked to discover that it is apparently common now for parents to allow their kids to skip school, simply because the kids or their parents had woken up late.
Influencer and teacher, Mohd Fadli Salleh, took to his Facebook page to showcase a screenshot of a class’s attendance on Tuesday (May 13), which shows that out of 7 students who did not attend school that day, 4 had given the excuse of waking up late.

He wrote, “The excuse for not attending school in this day and age. What is even more ridiculous is when asking the student why they didn’t attend school, they’ll say, ‘My father woke up late, there was no one to send me.'”
Why is this happening?
Mohd Fadli Salleh went on to share his belief that kids from not-so-privileged backgrounds are given free rein to not attend school by their parents.

“If you notice, most students who do not attend school, on the excuse of waking up late, come from middle-class or underprivileged families. I’m not saying it’s all of them, but a majority. Our parents were underprivileged people, growing paddy, tapping rubber trees, buying cattle, building houses,”
“But, if we didn’t go to school, we would have been beaten with yam sticks. They knew they were poor because they didn’t pursue their studies. That’s why they forced their kids to study properly. People now (not all), the underprivileged ones, always allow their kids to skip school, neglect their homework and skip extra classes. That’s why it’s weird,” he explained.
He also added that this could be caused by social media content that disregards the need for an education to become rich.
