On 1 May, authorities were urged to take action after a Malaysian woman was exposed for giving vape to her baby. The woman had recorded the video and uploaded it on her Instagram stories where she can be seen holding a vape pod in front of the baby. The baby then leans forward and takes a puff of the vape. While they initially tried to justify their actions, the couple soon backtracked and apologised claiming that the action was just a joke.
However, the couple pleaded not guilty at the Selayang Sessions Court today (10 June) to charges of neglecting their nine-month-old son by letting the child smoke vape last month.
Astro Awani reported that the two accused parents (aged 21 and 23 respectively), were jointly charged with neglecting their child by giving him vape to smoke which would likely cause him physical and emotional injury. The offense was allegedly committed at a house in Taman Sahabat Jaya, Batu Caves, at 1am on 2 May.
They were charged under Section 31 (1) (a) of the Children Act 2001. If convicted, they can be punished under Section 3 (1) of the same act, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to 20 years or a combination of those consequences.
Each of the accused was bailed with RM6,000 and they must report to the police station once a month and are prohibited from living in the same house with the victim until the case is completed.
