A 2-year relationship recently ended when a Malaysian woman decided to call it quits, but not before making a promise to the man.

She had allegedly promised that they could remain friends and possibly be together again in the future.

In less than 3 months, the woman got together with someone new without telling her ex-boyfriend, which the man felt was borderline cheating. He was also not happy that he was blocked from all her social media accounts and had no way to contact the woman.

And although he desired to move on, he wanted the woman to “compensate” him first for the financial losses, which include the dine out bills, gifts, and allowances, which would total up to around RM10,000.

He went to the extent of confronting the parents of his ex-girlfriend, who refused to entertain him about the compensation. Taking his dilemma to the Facebook group 法律与你同行 Law & Justice, he sought legal advice on the matter, including whether he could demand RM10,000 as compensation for his mental health damage.

He also had a few additional questions in mind:

  • Should the woman return all the gifts if she were found cheating?
  • How long should one remain single after a break-up before engaging in a new relationship?
  • If one of the parties gets into a relationship 2 months after the break-up, is it considered cheating?

“Let yourself go, man, and save RM15 a day”

The moderator of the group, who approved the post, shared her take on the matter with references from a Malaysian law firm, Kuek, Ong Associates, and answered the man’s dilemma, in an attempt to end his frustration.

  • A gift is a gift, and once given, it belongs to the receiver. Unless both parties agreed, for instance, to return certain items should the wedding get called off.
  • The woman reserves the right to get into a new relationship even on the day of the break-up.

As for the compensation, the moderator advised the man to let go and make it a habit to save RM15 per day, and in two years, he would get the money back through his savings.

The moderator also sarcastically reminded the man to become a monk, not just to save money but also to improve himself.

What do you think of this? Was what the woman did considered cheating, or should the man just let go and let God?
