Social media can be pretty scary because what you see online could be either real or fake, and the speed at which information spreads makes it difficult to take anything back once it’s been posted.
Amalina (pseudonym) reached out to WORLD OF BUZZ to share a shocking experience she had while encountering something she never expected to see on the internet, hoping to raise awareness about it.
Her friend was a victim of a creepshot
Amalina explained that her friend, whom we’ll call Julia, was a victim of a creepshot and had a traumatic experience on X (formerly known as Twitter).
She detailed how Julia received unwanted messages from unknown men soliciting sexual favours or insulting her. Amalina also revealed that 1 message contained multiple creepshot links, with the sender hoping Julia could expose them.
“The DM included screenshots of the account links and an invitation to join their Telegram group by messaging the owner of the account. As I am writing this, the account has been banned. However, Julia shared the messages with our friends, and I decided to investigate further,” Amalina added.
She found even more disturbing content
Amalina went on to explain that during her investigation, she discovered multiple accounts sharing and selling these creepshots online.
“I used to run a K-POP blog account in high school, so I’m familiar with how these sites work. By searching for the 1st account (that was shared with Julia), the site suggested other similar accounts on the right side of the page. That’s how I found even more disturbing accounts sharing the same content.”
She also mentioned that she used hashtags from each post to find similar accounts. She noted that reporting these accounts might not be effective, as the owners often just create new accounts to continue their activities.
“I was angry, scared and sad”
Amalina expressed her outrage at the fact that the images being exposed and sexualised were of women simply going about their daily lives. Some were working in stores, others were buying groceries, while another was simply shopping for her children’s school clothes.
“I couldn’t find the exact image anymore, but it was a photo of a mother looking for school clothes for her son, followed by a creepshot of her. It infuriates me that such innocent moments between a mother and her child are being exploited by these individuals.”
She emphasised that these women are simply living their lives and should not be blamed for it. Amalina also pointed out that when Julia voiced her concerns about being creepshot, the online comments unfairly criticised her clothing and behaviour.
“I’m calling for better law enforcement on these issues. We need stronger internet regulations to protect women’s safety and prevent such content from surfacing. These offenders need to be caught, not just banned.”
To all the women out there who might face such disturbing acts, please stay vigilant and cautious wherever you are. We hope that appropriate actions will be taken against these harmful accounts to ensure everyone’s safety.
