Different jobs come with their own sets of challenges and obstacles to overcome, but some would argue that one of the most taxing careers on Earth would have to be nursing.
Often referred to as a calling rather than a job, many nurses are frequently tasked with various demanding and arduous duties that go above and beyond that of a corporate job for the regular man.
Recognising such a daunting role, one Malaysian bakery owner decided to take a portion of his day to express his gratitude for nurses who work at Subang Jaya Medical Centre (SJMC). As the proud owner of renowned baker Sugar and I, Syed Mohd Ilyas shared the moment to his bakery’s TikTok page @sugar.and.i, dubbing his act on behalf of the bakery as a celebration happiness.
Providing a backstory as to what inspired him to carry out this act of kindness, Ilyas revealed that his aunt used to be a nurse.
“When we were growing up, I always heard stories about how difficult it is to be a nurse. They don’t sleep, sometimes they work 12-, 14-, 16-hour shifts, with no rest and all the complains they get,” he said in the clip.
Forthright about their role being underappreciated in society, Ilyas stated that his hope was to surprise them with treats courtesy of Sugar And I, and let them know that there are people in the world who care about them.
Walking into SJMC, Ilyas delivered multiple pastry boxes containing his signature Bomboloni treats to the nurses who work there. Heart-warming and special, the nurses in the video could be seen extending their gratitude towards Ilyas for his kind act.
“We just want to give a big shoutout to all the nurses out there for taking care of us and for being there when we truly need it. Much love!” said Ilyas as the video concluded.
Praising Ilyas and Sugar And I for extending such a gesture, many Malaysians in the comments section expressed how much it meant to see nurses receive this form of recognition, including one commenter who was a nurse themselves.
“Thank you so much for the appreciation, I’m a nurse from Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz,” wrote the user.
In the same breath, another user also added to Ilyas’ sentiment of nurses being overworked and underpaid, saying that appreciating them is crucial and necessary.
“Nurses are honestly the backbones of a hospital!” wrote the user, with the bakery responding saying that they hope to do more acts like this in the future.
