If you have seafood as part of your meal in a restaurant, you better be ready to treat it as a fancy meal. A Malaysian man recently handpicked some prawns and fried squid for his meal at a Mamak restaurant, but the bill was something he did not expect.
The man purchased 2 portions of rice from a famous Mamak restaurant in PJ. The order included a portion of cabbage, a fried egg, fried chicken, fried squid, and 2 prawns. For that, he was charged a total of RM89.80.
Based on the receipt, 1 prawn is priced at RM20 and since he bought 2 prawns, it was RM40 for the prawns alone. He was baffled at the price and shared his experience on the Facebook group KL吹水站.
“The price at a Mamak restaurant. Other restaurants are not even this expensive,” he said in his post.
The man also said that with the price of RM40, others could’ve ordered a plate of prawns someplace else and not just 2 pieces of it.
Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, the man, who wishes to remain anonymous said that it was not his first visit to the famous Mamak restaurant in PJ but it was his 1st time having seafood there.
“I’ve e-mailed the relevant department and filed an official complaint about the pricing,” he said.
He also told WORLD OF BUZZ that the prawns served were not fresh and on that basis, the manager of the said Mamak restaurant refunded him for the prawns.
“But I went on to file an official complaint because I just can’t accept that a prawn costs RM20.”
Just recently, another hawker in Cheras went viral for charging his customer RM40 for 2 sets of fried rice with 6 prawns. The owner has since justified his pricings and said that he’s using prawns shipped from Sabah.
In this case, the man claimed that the prawns were not fresh, and the pricing for a piece of prawn was unacceptable. Judging from the size of the prawn based on the image above, do you think it’s standard pricing for seafood in Mamak restaurants?
Or do you think it’s “daylight robbery?”
