The Johor state government recently revealed that nearly 1,000 students in Johor skipped SPM because they’re aiming for lucrative pay in Singapore and believe they could do so even without sitting for SPM.

A Malaysian man working in Singapore since 2015 had something to say about what those students thought.

“It’s embarrassing and not a wise decision”

39-year-old Shahruddin said that most companies in Singapore only employ those with a minimum of an SPM certificate.

He added that most Malaysians who work in the republic possess at least a diploma or a degree. Also, Shahruddin also said most jobs in Singapore require their employees to speak in English daily.

“They didn’t think of the long-term consequences. The chances of finding jobs are higher if you have an SPM certificate, and it’s also easier for your career growth.”

Shahruddin also mentioned the payment of the Foreign Work Levy (FWL), in which employers would hire those with SPM qualification and above because the payments are much cheaper than hiring those who don’t have an SPM certificate, reported Berita Harian.

“To the young generation, please prioritise your study. Don’t regret about it in the future. At least finish your SPM,” Shahruddin said.

In the meantime, a former Malaysian worker in Singapore also weighed in on the matter. 38-year-old Amalina said the decision to skip SPM for lucrative pay jobs in Singapore is unwise and would not benefit anyone in the future.

“You need to be fluent in English. All directions and instructions at the workplace are given in that language.”

To those who are working in Singapore, what do you think of this?
