Truthfully, we fear for the generation or anyone who believes that you can easily survive without sitting for the SPM – the most important examination before you pursue your tertiary education.

With the 2023 SPM results recently out of the oven, many took to social media and shared their joy for good achievements, while some proudly showed off failed results and convinced others that they could make it through. In a viral post, a man on TikTok recently told everyone to “take a chill pill” about SPM.

“I failed my SPM. Now, I’m working for a company with a monthly salary of RM3,500. Chill. SPM isn’t everything,” the man laughed.

The screenshot has since circulated online, but an uncle, whose son scored straight A’s in the past, told the man what it would be like if he had taken the exam seriously.

“Good for you. But my son scored straight A’s in the past, and now he’s earning RM25,000 abroad.”

Could’ve, would’ve, should’ve.

“Everything starts with SPM”

Social media users then took the chance to explain what SPM really is—it isn’t a mere exam. One user explained what might happen if his workplace shuts down in the future and how tough it might be for him to get a new job.

“He may have vast experience in the field, but the company’s minimum requirement is a Degree. Even the banks won’t be convinced to grant his loan given his SPM qualification.”

“This is the example of someone who is not smart but is a show-off. He’s earning a mere RM3,500, but he has forgotten about his origins,” said a user.

Another user commented, “SPM is not everything, but your knowledge shows your mindset.”

Congratulations to those who did well in SPM 2023! If you didn’t, it’s not the end of the world as long as you strive to improve yourself.
