Previously, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that he wants the Palestine Solidarity Week that begins Sunday at schools nationwide controlled.
This is following viral video and photos of schoolchildren and teachers brandishing replica guns causing an uproar on social media.
Following the Prime Minister’s comments, the Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced that it will not compromise any elements of extremism and violence during the organising of the programme at schools and all educational institutions under its purview.
As reported by BERNAMA, MOE in a statement stressed that the use of replica weapons, icons and symbols containing provocative and confrontational elements is not permitted.
MOE further asserted that the programme, taking place from 29 October to 3 November 2023, is meant to educate students about noble values that include human rights and compassion, empathy and concern for the suffering borne by others regardless of race, religion or social status.
The Ministry also clarified that the aforementioned viral videos took place outside of the Palestine Solidarity Week period.
The statement added,
“The MOE encourages activities that support humanitarian issues such as peace-themed video screenings and poster painting competitions, recital of humanitarian poetry, and fundraising for the Palestinian people to be carried out throughout the week.
“All institutions under the MOE have been asked to always follow the organising guidelines.”
