Recently, a job posting for the position of a nanny opened up in Silicon Valley, California.
Rumours are running wild that the employer could be Facebook CEO and Co-founder, Mark Zuckerberg as the job posting highlighted that the nanny should be able to speak Mandarin, Shanghaiist reported.
The notice, which was put up on Indeed.com, offered an annual salary ranging between USD$110,000 and USD$130,000 (approx. RM461,000 and RM545,000) to the hired person.
That’s about RM38,400 to RM45,400 a month!
The nanny’s schedule is rather special too. The person would have to work five days straight, which is then followed by five days off. They have to clock in at 8am and clock out at 9pm.
Besides a generous pay cheque, the nanny will also receive great benefits akin to an engineer in Silicon Valley! Where do I sign up???
The requirements for this nanny position are as follows:
- At least 3 years experience
- A bachelor’s degree
- Must be fluent in Mandarin
- Loves children
- Has basic medical training
Although it is common to want to teach our kids Mandarin in Malaysia, it is actually rather uncommon over there in the US, which is why people began speculating who the employer might be.
Netizens pieced the puzzle together and came up with the conclusion that the employer might be the Zuckerberg family due to several reasons.
1. The salary stated is very high for any ordinary employer to offer
2. The family is young and entrepreneurial with several businesses and charities
3. The household already has many staff holding several positions
4. The description of the newborn baby matches the Zuckerberg’s second daughter, August
5. Mark and his wife, Priscilla Chan, have always showed a lot of enthusiasm for the Chinese language and culture.
After all, the billionaire has even given multiple speeches in Mandarin during several notable events in the past.
In fact, when Mark met China’s president, Xi Jinping in 2015, the Facebook CEO asked the president to give a Chinese name to his first unborn child, Maxima. However, the president kindly declined.
In February 2016, the Zuckerberg couple released a video wishing everyone a happy Chinese New Year while announcing Maxima’s Chinese name, Chen Mingyu (陈明宇).

Due to these few reasons, people truly believe that the potential employer could just be Mark Zuckerberg. The news spread like wildfire on social media and many Mandarin-speaking netizens stepped up for the position.
Though netizens are convinced they’re the billionaire couple, there are actually no concrete evidence.
While teaching children Mandarin has become a common event in the world today due to China’s ever-growing market, don’t simply send your resumes in to the job listing unless you truly fit the job description, ok. 😉
