Forest City in Johor is ranked the second most useless megaproject in the world by Top Luxury. Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository in the US tops the list.
Forest City is meant to be a green futuristic smart residential city situated on four artificial islands and built around an artificial forest ecosystem. The idea is to make Malaysia as 2nd home for Chinese nationals. Even the street signs are in Mandarin!
Is Malaysia popular for all the wrong reasons?
Out of the four islands, only one is close to completion.
It is said that political interference is hindering the progress. When Mahathir Mohammad returned as prime minister, he banned foreigners from owning properties in Forest City. Now, this project is hit by the current pandemic and the travel ban.
Forest City is designed for 700,000 people but as of 2020, only less than 500 people are living there.
The sale of properties in Forest City has stopped due to the pandemic.
According to Top Luxury,
“It is safe to assume that despite the billions invested, Forest City is currently a useless megaproject.”
Netizen are two minded about this ranking. Some patriotically disagreed with the listicle.
However, a majority of Malaysians agreed with Forest City being a useless megaproject.
