Any seasoned traveller would’ve probably told you about their experiences backpacking through popular Indonesian destinations such as Bali and Lombok. Well, we recently talked to a well-travelled Malaysian, and he had loads to say about Lampung, a province on the southern tip of Sumatra neighbouring Jakarta.
If you haven’t heard much of Lampung yet, then read on to find out why you should include it in your travel plans the next you visit Indonesia.
1. Enjoy panoramic views of the landscape from Puncak Mas
Located just 30 minutes away from Lampung Town, Puncak Mas is a great place to visit offering plenty of photo opportunities and fun-filled activities.What to expect:
- Located atop a hill, Puncak Mas is a great place to unwind and relax in the cool air.
- There are five tree houses available for visitors to climb and experience picture-perfect views of the landscape.
- A treetop bike ride perfect for thrill seekers where you’ll ride from one tree house to another above ground. You’ll be safely secured so it’s safe!
- Aside from its gorgeous views, the spot is also a pretty romantic place at night where you’ll get to experience the city’s sparkling lights in the distance while you sway to the rhythm of live music.
2. Take a relaxing stroll along Pantai Pasir Putih and catch a boat ride to Bule Island
Literally meaning White Sand Beach in English, the beach is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike due to its soft white sand and postcard views at sunset.What to expect:
- Water sports activities such as kayaking and snorkelling suitable for everyone to enjoy.
- The beach is also the gateway to Bule Island, a lesser known island perfect for anyone who prefers a quieter scene.
- At Bule, travellers will be treated to great scuba diving and snorkelling spots boasting unspoilt coral reefs and marine life right before their eyes!
3. Get your adrenaline pumping by hiking up the ‘Child of Krakatau’ Mount
If you didn’t know already, Mount Krakatau (or Krakatoa) is an active volcano in Indonesia infamously known for its devastating eruption in 1883 which was the most destructive in recorded history. Following the eruption, a new volcanic island called Anak Krakatau meaning Child of Krakatau in English emerged from the 1883 caldera. Today, Anak Krakatau remains as the new centre of volcanic activity and a popular tourist site.What to expect:
- Visiting Anak Krakatau requires a special license and permission from the Krakatoa National Park. We recommend taking a tour package as you’ll be provided with the license and an experienced ranger to accompany you on the hike.
- The hike up Krakatau isn’t challenging making it suitable for most travellers.
- At the top, you’ll be rewarded with picture-perfect views of the crystal blue ocean and the lush green islands surrounding Krakatau.
- After the hike, cool off by snorkelling at Lagoon Cabe as you explore coral reefs and immerse yourself amongst sea anemones, trumpetfishes, and other aquatic life.
4. Camp out under the stars at Gigi Hiu as you marvel at the natural beauty of the rock formations

There’s nothing quite like spending a night under the stars be it with a loved one or with a group of friends. Well, if you’re an adventurer at heart and are after something unconventional, then a trip to Gigi Hiu is simply a must!
What to expect:
- IG worthy photo opportunities of the rock formations which resembles that of a shark’s teeth. Gigi Hiu means shark’s teeth in Malay.
- Be mesmerised by gorgeous views at sunset as you immerse yourself in the sounds of waves crashing against the rocks.
- It’s also recommended you camp out for the night as the location is popular for spotting the Milky Way!

5. Spend a day discovering coral reefs at Sebuku Island
What’s great about Lampung is that it’s also the gateway to many other hidden gems such as pristine beaches and untouched islands. Sebuku island is just ONE example and is totally worth the trip if you’re visiting Lampung.What to expect:
- Located off the coast of Lampung, Sebuku is only accessible by boat, which can be chartered at Dermaga Canti in Kalianda, South Lampung. The boat ride takes about an hour.
- Dive into crystal blue waters, enjoy stunning coral reefs, and discover the many secrets the ocean has to offer.
- Enjoy a fulfilling lunch as you sample seafood fresh from the sea! Think fresh fish, clams, squid, and many more!
