China has chosen Malaysia as the host for the first-ever Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration to be held outside of the country.

The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, stated that this was announced during a meeting with the Minister of Culture and Tourism of China, Sun Yeli, during the China International Travel Mart in Shanghai.

In his Facebook post last night (November 26), Tiong said the preparation work for the CNY celebration in Malaysia is actively ongoing and the celebration is expected to be held on 23 January 2025.

“China has begun finalising the list of performers who will take part and has urged Malaysia to provide support and maximize promotional campaigns.”

Tiong also stated that Yeli described the two countries as having deep cultural ties, and this would highlight China’s active efforts in industrialising the cultural sector.

In this regard, he suggested that both countries explore joint developments in this field.

“Moving forward, we can explore deeper cooperation, including cultural exchange platforms for students and welcoming Chinese investments with the aim of enhancing Malaysia’s destination appeal.”

“With an inspiration from China’s cultural advancements, Malaysia aims to achieve greater success in the future.”

Tiong also announced that he had a meeting with the Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of South Korea, Yu In Chon. He said that South Korea and Malaysia will jointly host the ASEAN-Korea Music Festival (Festival ROUND 2025).

“South Korea will establish a cultural center in Kuala Lumpur next year to mark the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and South Korea, further promoting cultural exchanges.”
