Every filmmaker has their own unique perspectives in making their production outstanding as compared to the others. Criticisms are bound to happen, and Dr Maszlee Malik recently had to apologise for a villainous character that he plays in the TV series Kudeta due to an obscene dialogue.

Just this morning (January 30), a local YouTuber & movie reviewer, Mat Don says that the criticisms of Kudeta will only lead to one thing – the lack of development in the local film industry.

Of fiction and reality

In his Twitter thread, Mat Don explained that a character in a movie does not represent the actor’s personality in real life. Mat Don used a local film from 1960, “Isi Neraka”, with the late Salleh Kamil who played the character of a person who is not a believer of religion, and mocks the beliefs of others.

The late Haji Mahadi, one of the actors in Isi Neraka said that it is not wrong to portray a villainous character if the intention is only to spread awareness to the audience.

“So, do you expect an evil character to speak like a scholar or quote himself from the religious books?” Mat Don rhetorically asked.

He then sarcastically said that the people who criticise a film without watching it are also acting.

“They’re acting as people with brains when they’re actually brainless.”

At the end of his tweet, Mat Don urged others to not criticise if they have yet to watch the entire film or series.

What does Mat Don think about THAT Kudeta scene?

Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Mat Don said that Maszlee’s controversial scene is not too much, or exaggerated at all.

“As Mariam’s enemy and as someone egotistical who cannot accept defeat, his character HAS to be hateful. He’s trying to get into the head of his enemy, and he managed to do it.”

In the meantime, Mat Don also told WORLD OF BUZZ that the audience should be fair when they’re judging. To him, it’s okay to be mad at the character, but not the actor who brings the character to life.

“Be fair. We can be angry at the character, but not the actor.” he said.

You can read Mat Don’s full tweet below.

Fellow Malaysian audience, if you have watched the Kudeta series, what do you think of that scene? Do you think Maszlee’s character reflects the words of an evil person or has the script gone too far?
