Nine days after its release in Malaysia, the award-winning local film “Abang Adik” surpassed a whopping RM2 million at the box office.
In addition to the good news, the Abang Adik movie is now available in English subtitles. The film can directly reach a boarder audience with the Chinese, Malay, and English subtitles available.
Directed by Perak-born filmmaker Jin Ong, the film has won multiple awards, including the Best Lead Performance, Jury Award and Audience Award at the Sea Okinawa Pan-Pacific International Film Festival; Golden Mulberry Audience Award, the Black Dragon Critics’ Prize and the White Mulberry Award for the best first feature at the Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy.
Additionally, it won the Uncaged Award for Best Feature Film at the 22nd New York Asian Film Festival. Taiwanese actor Wu Kang Ren, one of the main characters in “Abang Adik”, has also won the Best Leading Actor at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival 2023.
The film follows the story of Abang and Adik, two undocumented orphans in Malaysia who adopted each other as ‘brothers’ when growing up. Set in Pudu, Kuala Lumpur, the movie captures their unique and compelling journey.
