The Kuala Lumpur to Singapore flight route has been dethroned from its title as the world’s busiest international airline route despite the flight route recording 5.4 million seats this year.

Instead, as revealed by the latest statistics by OAG, a global travel data and insight firm, the route has to settle for fourth place, with the title of busiest international flight route going to the Hong Kong to Taipei route.

In its report for 2024, OAG revealed that the Hong Kong to Taipei route recorded 6.8 million seats, a whopping 48% year-on-year increase from 2023.

Second place is Cairo to Jeddah, followed by Seoul to Tokyo in third place and Kuala Lumpur to Singapore in fourth.

However, the Kuala Lumpur to Singapore route did get second place for December with 467,474 seats, with Hong Kong to Taipei still recording the most seats with 624,604 in the same period.

7 of the top 10 busiest international flight routes are in Asia-Pacific

According to OAG chief analyst John Grant, the busiest international routes are concentrated around major hubs such as Hong Kong, Seoul, Incheon and Singapore as the Asia-Pacific region nears full recovery.

This can be seen by how the top 10 busiest international routes in 2024 are mostly in Asia (7), with one each from Africa, Europe/North America and the Middle East.

He further noted that the composition of supply on these routes is now shifting as low-cost carriers grow at a faster pace than legacy airlines.
