Earlier this month, it was reported that a 34-year-old woman, Norfarahain Abd Manap, in Johor Bahru needed approximately RM420,000 for pembrolizumab injections to improve her chances of surviving stage 2 lymphoma cancer.
She, alongside her 29-year-old husband, Muhammad Adam Abdullah, had reached out to the general public for help in order to afford the cost of the treatments.
According to a report by Harian Metro, Norfarahain’s former colleague has since taken advantage of this by using her name to obtain donations for her own benefit. The former colleague, known as Wawa, has been misusing Norfarahain’s name and situation to collect funds in Singapore.
“She said she wanted to help ease my burden, but I didn’t expect her to give various reasons when I asked for the collected money. On June 16 (Friday), Wawa came to see me at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA).”
“She wanted to collect donations at her work place, which is a restaurant in Singapore, to ease my burden, especially to finance part of the medical costs and promised to hand over the money within a certain period. I was initially moved because she was the first person to want to create a collection fund. She once sent me a video stating that there were people who donated up to SGD50 (RM170),” Norfarahain explained.
Then, on July 27 (Thursday), Wawa had reached out to Norfarahain to ask for her bank account details. Though, soon after, she started giving various reasons, including that her phone line was being problematic and that she was changing jobs, to avoid making the transaction of the donated funds.
“It caused a misunderstanding between me and Wawa,” she added.
Following that, Norfarahain made a police report at the Permas Jaya Police Station on August 4 (Friday), in regards to this matter.
When Wawa found out about this, she deposited RM1,000 into Norfarahain’s bank account.
“However, she denied that it was the donated funds and instead claimed that the money belonged to her employer. I hope Wawa stops her fundraising activities using my name,” she said.
We genuinely hope that the authorities find and stop Norfarahain’s former colleague before she cheats more people out of their money.
Norfarahain has since received a visit from the Johor Islamic Religious Council (MAIJ), who contributed an amount as aid on a one-off basis.
Should you wish to assist Norfarahain with her treatment costs, you can do so to her Maybank account (162786154316).
