Malaysia may be enduring political and other social turmoil that’s causing many to lose faith in our country, but it will always be home to most of us. And it seems that it’s also home to others who come here to make a life for themselves.
The popular foodie from the UK, Rhys William has shared how happy he is to have moved to Malaysia.
He took to his Instagram account to tell the story (in perfect Bahasa Malaysia) of how much he loves living in Malaysia after he moved here 8 years ago, on Malaysia Day.
Rhys wrote, “Happy 8th Anniversary in Malaysia, Rhys. 14 September 2013 was the first day I ‘settled’ in Malaysia. On 13 September, I moved out of my house in the UK and sold all my things there. I arrived in Malaysia late at night on the 14th with only one suitcase. This picture is after I had arrived and ate mee goreng at a roadside stall near the hotel.”
“At that time, I didn’t know what would happen in Malaysia, I just knew my dream was to live here.”
Eight years later, Rhys is truly happy and enjoying the life he has built here in Malaysia.
“Now, eight years later, I am making a living in Malaysia. I have a career that I love, I am happily married and have a child. I really feel accepted here. More than half of my ‘adult life is in Malaysia and Malaysia really is my home. Even though I am still a UK citizen, the UK no longer feels like my ‘home’, when I go there I can’t wait to ‘return’ to Malaysia,”
“When I think back, I think the decision to move here was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. I really feel happy in Malaysia.
He added that he endured his fair share of hardships during his time here, but none of which can overshadow his good experiences.
“While most of my experiences in Malaysia have been very positive, my journey here has not always been fun, I’ve been through all sorts of grief. Some people have taken advantage of me, some played ‘games’ with me, some people have criticised me. But that’s the reality of this life, if we want something, we will be tested to see if we really want it,”
“God does not burden a person except according to his ability.”
He ended his post by thanking everyone who has supported and accepted him, hoping that he will be able to celebrate more anniversaries here in the years to come.
“Here’s to another eight years!”
His love for our country is truly inspiring that we can only hope to radiate and demonstrate that same energy.
We’re so happy that Rhys found peace here.
