Recently, the issue of China flags being waved at a World Guan Gong Celebration at the Menara Condong, Teluk Intan, Perak, had gone viral, which led to the police getting involved as the event was allegedly held without a permit. The police also called for the Chinese nationals who waved the China flags to be presented to them.
Now, another Guan Gong celebration, the Malaysian International Guan Gong Cultural Festival 2024 in Johor Bahru, is getting called out.
This time, Perikatan Nasional (PN) political activist Salim Iskandar took to his X account to bash the event for displaying and waving China flags.
He wrote, “Did you guys know, it turns out that the parade that waved China flags did not just happen in Teluk Intan, but it also took place in Johor Bahru.”
“This time, the person who officiated the parade is YB Kerk Chee Yee, the ADUN for Ayer Keroh, Melaka. (He is) also the Deputy Speaker for the state of Melaka. This time, there are even photos, videos and everything else as proof. Is DAP going to deny this again?”
However, many took to his post to point out that the celebration in Johor Bahru is an international event (as mentioned in the event’s title). Hence, it is only normal to have other countries’ flags present and displayed.
“The name of the event has ‘international’ in it, lah, so other countries’ flags cannot be waved at international programs, is it?”
“Dude, it’s an international event that has participants from other countries. Think of it like people waving their own flags at the Olympics. Even this, you want to politicise. So stupid.”
“Are you only allowed to show the China flags? I noticed that there were flags from other countries that joined (the event). Do you think that only China has Buddhism?”
“There are Thai flags, brother. Maybe the flags show which country the participants come from.”
Others also pointed out that, in Malaysia, Palestine flags are displayed everywhere and that Malaysian flags can often be spotted in China as well.
