Indonesia Now Highest Covid-19 Cases In ASEAN At 5,923

As Malaysia is slowly seeing the decrease in new Covid-19 cases and an increase in recovery, our neighbours are only just starting to face the reality of the Covid-19 spread. Indonesia’s Covid-19 virus cases continues to rise and the country now has the highest number of cases in ASEAN with 24 more deaths happening within a day.

Indonesian government spokesman Achmad Yurianto said, as reported by CNA, 407 new cases were detected within 24 hours, bringing the number of positive cases to 5,923, since the first positive case was confirmed on March 2.

Meanwhile, the death toll went up by 24 on Friday and the total is now at 520. The number of recovered patients however, has increased by 59, with a total of 607.

Yurianto also explained that Indonesia will be improving its test rate and is targeting to do about 10,000 tests per day. He said,

“The president (Mr Joko Widodo) has instructed for testing to be conducted more massively and contact tracing done more aggressively. Today, Indonesia has the capacity to test 17,900 samples (per day). We will continue to increase the capacity.”

Apart from the rapid increase in the number of cases, Professor Wiku Adisasmito, an expert with the Indonesian government pandemic task force has said that the country’s Covid-19 cases could exceed 100,000 in the near future.
