Our country was shocked recently by a hit-and-run case in Meru, Ipoh, involving a senior police officer who caused the death of a 17-year-old teen.

The police officer has since been detained and remanded for investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1988, with statements from 7 witnesses have also been recorded to facilitate the investigation.

Since then, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has stressed that the investigation of the case will be conducted transparently and fairly despite it involving a senior police officer.

On its official Facebook page, PDRM shared the statement by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain who asserted,

“I give my assurance that the investigation will be conducted transparently and fairly even though the case involves a senior officer with the rank of Deputy Superintendent (DSP) attached to the Kedah police contingent.”

Razarudin has also issued instructions to the Ipoh District Police Chief, Perak Police Chief and Director of Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department (JSPT) to conduct the investigation impartially.

Moreover, the IGP urged other witnesses and those with information on the incident to come forward to help in the investigation.

The incident took place on Friday (15 December), whereby the victim, 17-year-old Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamri, died at the scene after suffering injuries to his chest and abdomen.

The victim succumbed to his injuries after the motorcycle he was riding was hit by a car, believed to have been driven by a 44-year-old senior police officer, on Jalan Taman Jati close to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Jati near Meru.

It is understood that the incident occurred after the driver of a Perodua Ativa car was said to have been dissatisfied with the victim’s noisy motorcycle exhaust pipe as the victim was riding from SMK Jati back home.
