Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria kept the promise he made last May and resigned as the president of the Badminton Association Malaysia (BAM), effective yesterday (August 24).
The position of president is now held by Deputy President BAM, Datuk V Subramaniam, until the election of a new Exco scheduled between April and June next year.
Norza also shared an unforgettable moment for him – when the men’s doubles team, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, emerged as world champions in 2022.
“In Tokyo where we won the world championship, I was rolling on the stadium floor. I always say by winning the world championship, we make history,” Norza said.
Norza continued and said,
“Because if you say you are good at badminton but have never won a world tournament, you can’t say you are good at badminton. It’s the same with the gold medal, we need to hunt and keep trying to get it.”
In a media conference shared on BAM’s Facebook page, Norza admitted that he has no regrets.
“I have done my best and tried my best and given my best. Hopefully, the next leadership can ensure that badminton remains a matter of pride for Malaysia.”
Norza also expressed his hope to see the stakeholders support the next leadership under Datuk Subramaniam and said he has full faith in him and the experience he has to assume the position of president.
Norza previously announced that he would leave his post at the end of last year but was convinced by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Hannah Yeoh, who asked him to continue his duties until the end of the Games Paris Olympics 2024.
