By now, we’re sure that many of you, especially hardcore fans of Michelle Yeoh and Everything Everywhere all at Once have known that the Ipoh-born actress won the Best Actress Award at the Oscars 2023 during the 95th Academy Awards.

Michelle won the Best Actress Award for her role as Evelyn in EEAAO, and the film itself triumphs at the Oscar by winning a majority of the categories.

Michelle’s victory is, of course, good news to many Malaysians who have been supporting her throughout her career, but a Hong Kong actor, Chapman To was quick to give a friendly reminder to his government.

“A friendly reminder. Michelle Yeoh is a Malaysian. Don’t take advantage of her victory again,” Chapman said in his Facebook post this evening (March 13).

His “friendly reminder” is a reference to the blunder that one of Hong Kong’s politicians made when he addressed Michelle Yeoh as a Hong Kong actor earlier this year.

Hong Kong’s Culture, Sports, and Tourism secretary, Kevin Yeung, congratulated Michelle earlier this year for her victory at the Golden Globes, and said,

“Michelle Yeoh first made a name (for herself) in the Hong Kong film sector, then moved on to the international stage with her exceptionally outstanding acting skills and hard work.”

Chapman’s comment section on Facebook was not accessible to everyone, but a few netizens from Hong Kong took the opportunity to express what they think about their government.

“They still dare?”

Chapman then responded and said that other than good things, the government dares to do a lot of things 😀

“They’re gonna talk about it as if it has anything to do with them.”

“They’ll find a way to take advantage of it.”

On the other hand, Michelle’s victory in the Oscar marks the first Asian to win the Best Actress Award and the first time that multiple Asian actors won Oscars in the same year. It was also considered a major night for the Asian and Asian American representation.

Congratulations Michelle Yeoh for your outstanding victory in Hollywood! Hopefully, she’ll star in many more Hollywood flicks to showcase her talent by taking on different roles and characters.
