The government has agreed to a proposed policy to limit the Prime Minister’s term of office to 10 years as an important step towards strengthening the principles of accountability, checks and balances, and governance based on the Federal Constitution.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, said the decision was reached during the Cabinet’s weekly meeting on Friday.

“This decision was made after the Cabinet conducted a comprehensive review of policy inputs, public feedback, and recommendations submitted through holistic engagement sessions involving various stakeholders.”

“The proposed term limit aims to prevent the excessive concentration of power, strengthen the democratic system, and enhance public confidence in the country’s leadership institutions, in line with mature democratic practices at the international level,” she said in a statement.

Regarding the next steps, Azalina said the government will undertake several related amendments to the Federal Constitution, which are expected to be tabled in Parliament during the current sitting.

Prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when delivered his 2026 New Year Address at the Prime Minister’s Department’s monthly assembly earlier this month said a bill to limit the Prime Minister’s tenure would be tabled as part of the institutional reform measure being implemented by the government.

The move, he said, also formed part of its direction for this year’s Parliamentary session.
