We all know that religion means more to Malaysians than just as the first principle in our Rukun Negara. Our culture and history are shaped by the many religions practised in the country, plus Malaysian society strictly emphasises upholding tolerance to preserve religious unity among the rakyat.

Noting how important religion is in our nation, Belanjawan 2023 has introduced several measures to support Malaysians as they practise their faith.

Thanks to Belanjawan 2023, Malaysians are able to reap a menagerie of benefits from several initiatives and assistance plans as they practise their religion in Malaysia!

Understanding the significance of unity and inclusivity towards a better Malaysia, Belanjawan 2023 has cooked up an assortment of plans to keep Malaysians’ religious affairs in order! Wanna know how these initiatives will help religious devotees in Malaysia? Here’s how!:

1. Upholding religious harmony through social responsibility activities

Needless to say, religious harmony and unity are essential to Malaysia’s multicultural society. As the rakyat struggle with issues of social inequality and injustice, the Mdani government acknowledges that unity must remain preserved and intact to resolve these issues.

So to celebrate the spirit of inclusivity under Madani via religious affairs, the government has allocated RM50 million to support various programmes, including ‘Kembara Perpaduan Malaysia Madani’ and ‘Ini Warisan Kita’. Under these programmes, various activities will be held to foster unity and bridge the gap among communities, including unity sports leagues, cultural competitions, festive celebrations and culinary events.

b) Funding will be provided to non-Muslim houses of worship too

In addition, non-Muslim devotees get to benefit from these initiatives too! Through Belanjawan 2023, the government has allocated RM50 million for the maintenance and repair works of non-Muslim houses of worship throughout the country. This means all religious houses under Malaysia MADANI will not get left behind thanks to this initiative!

2. Up to RM1.5 billion is allocated towards handling Malaysia’s Islamic affairs

a) Financial assistance to cultivate efficient Islamic leadership

To promote efficient administration via Malaysia’s Islamic institutions, the government has provided allocation in regard to Islamic affairs totalling up to RM1.5 billion. Looking to make our nation a beacon for effective Islamic leadership, the government aims to cement Malaysia as a powerful centre for da’wah which promotes a better understanding of Islam.

The government also acknowledges that the root of Islamic leadership is proper education, which is why they’ve allocated RM150 million to repairs for rakyat Islamic schools, Tahfiz schools and registered pondok institutions. With these plans to promote infrastructural repair, teachers can provide a more conducive learning environment for future Islamic leaders!

b) Allowances for mosque staff members

Speaking of Islamic leadership, the government also believes that good Islamic management starts in the mosque, which is where imams, bilals and teachers play a crucial role. To give back to them for their hard work, the government has agreed to:

  1. Increase the allowance of 35,000 KAFA teachers by RM100 to RM1,100 with an additional allocation of more than RM40 million; and
  2. Provide a special payment of RM600 to Imam, Bilal, Tok Siak, Noja, Marbut, KAFA teachers and Takmir teachers. A total of 70,000 people will receive this payment, which involves an allocation of more than RM40 million.

But it’s not just the institutions that will receive assistance from the government! ?

3. Boosting cultural empowerment with higher-quality publishing and translation activities

Culture and religion often go hand-in-hand in developing a united and respectful society in Malaysia, betul tak? Acknowledging this, the government wants to empower reading culture at the community level by sowing interest in classic literature encompassing the knowledge and heritage of the Malay, Islamic and Western worlds.

To this end, the government allocated RM20 million to Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, together with the Institut Terjemahan & Buku Malaysia (ITBM) and Yayasan Karyawan for high-quality translation activities.

Some of the materials that will be translated and distributed under this measure include the great works of Imam Al-Ghazali, the originator of Maqasid Syariah, Abu Ishaq al-Shatibi, Sheikh Daud Abdullah al-Fatani, and Nuruddin Ali ar-Raniri, as well as the famed 20th-century philosopher Muhammad Iqbal.
