A foreign woman is currently claiming that customs officers at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2 treated her unfairly after she brought duty-free cigarettes into the country from the Maldives.
The story was shared by the Facebook page 今天你中三万了吗, alleging that the woman was taken to a small, dark room where officers reportedly attempted to pressure her into signing a detention notice.

The post stated:
“A foreign female tourist on her honeymoon in Malaysia was terrified after being detained by customs officers for bringing a few packs of duty-free cigarettes into the country.”
An unexpected ordeal
The couple had just arrived in Kuala Lumpur for their honeymoon following a trip to the Maldives. While at the duty-free shop at Malé Airport, they had casually purchased some cigarettes.
However, upon entering Kuala Lumpur, they encountered a significant issue with Malaysian customs, resulting in their passports being confiscated.
The woman explained that she and her husband were unaware of Malaysia’s strict regulations regarding cigarette imports, which dictate that bringing in tobacco products, even from duty-free shops, incurs hefty taxes.
Although she offered to let the officers confiscate the cigarettes, she was told that this did not exempt them from the required taxes or potential fines.

The “small, dark room”
According to the post, the customs officers confiscated their passports and led the woman into a small, dark room, leaving her husband waiting anxiously outside.
“Once inside, staff printed out a form and demanded she sign it immediately. She was so panicked that her hands were trembling; only after secretly translating the document on her phone did she realise, with horror, that it was a detention notice,” the post continued.
The woman described the experience as a complete breakdown, stating that while she cooperated fully, she felt wronged and unfairly treated. She was ultimately required to pay a substantial fine before being allowed to leave.
The post concluded with a stern warning from the tourist to all foreign visitors: do not bring a single cigarette into Malaysia, even if purchased at a duty-free shop.
