A football referee in Thailand has been issued a lifetime ban by the country’s Football Association (FA) after using a racial slur when talking to a Thai-Ghanaian player.
The referee, Somsak Poosonmnuek used racist language when talking to the player, Abdulkordiri Hamid during the Thai League 3 football match between his team Prachinburi City and Pattaya United on 29 October.
As reported by Siam Sport, the Thai FA and police launched an investigation into the incident and found that Somsak used the slur, which is equivalent to the N-word in Thai.
The Thai FA hence found it to amount to racial discrimination and that it had damaged the image of the association.
Somsak didn’t help his case either as prior to receiving the ban, he claimed that he wasn’t using racist language as he’s also ‘black’ in reference to his dark skin and that his friends have been calling him the racist slur all his life.
Hamid, who is a striker for Prachinburi City is fluent in Thai, hence he knows the meaning of the word and the racist connotation associated with it.
