There are many ways to tell others that you’re a Malaysian without telling others you’re a Malaysian, and food is one of the mediums where you can do so, specifically – Roti Canai!
Roti Canai is so common that it is available ALMOST everywhere, be it Mamak restaurants, roadside stalls, or even some fancy restaurants which will charge a higher price. Regardless, have you ever thought of Roti Canai which comes in various colours? What if we tell you, there’s a place in Kuala Selangor that serves Roti Canai in rainbow colours, and the customers are loving it?
If this elevates your curiosity, look no further than Roti Canai Pelangi in Kampung Sungai Yu 1, Kuala Selangor.
The place serves its Roti Canai in multiple colours – orange, red, yellow, green, blue, and white. WORLD OF BUZZ reached out to Roti Canai Pelangi and we were told that they are not the new players in town. In fact, they have been in the industry for over 20 years!
It’s not just the colours, but the flavours
Some may think that the colourful Roti Canai are simply the effects of food colourings. Each colour actually represents a different flavour, and here’s how you can identify them:
- Orange – Durian flavour
- Red – Strawberry flavour
- Yellow – Corn Flavour
- Green – Apple Flavour
- Blue – Yam Flavour
- White – Original Flavour
Flavoured Roti Canai in multiple colours? Who would’ve thought of that?
The journey to success was definitely a walk in the park. Roti Canai Pelangi revealed that it took them a good 6 months to ‘experiment’ with the colourings and flavourings.
Roti Canai, that’s it?
Since their speciality is the colourful Roti Canai, rest assured that the flavoured Roti Canai is not the only food in their menu.
‘We have Roti Telur, Roti Telur Goyang, Roti Sarang Burung, Roti Sardin, Roti Bom, Roti Planta,’ they told WORLD OF BUZZ.
Roti Canai is best served with its trademark sauce, the Dhaal and curry. But that’s not all. Roti Canai Pelangi said that they serve up to five different gravies.
‘We have Dhaal and curry, of course. Then, we have Chicken Feet Curry, Lamb Curry, and Beef Curry as optional gravy, which comes at additional prices.’
Rainbows illustrate the ‘colour of happiness’
When asked about the concept of the rainbow, Roti Canai Pelangi told WORLD OF BUZZ that the colours are not only meant as an attraction but also an illustration of the colour of happiness.
‘I see the colours as an attraction not only for the local tourist, but also foreign tourists. So far, the reception has been good.’
The food has been well received and business is booming. Roti Canai Pelangi has 16 members of staff, and some of them are youths from nearby villages who has been recruited to support the operation.
Each Roti Canai is sold at RM1.50.
